    Scorpions

    Hanover, Germany·1965–present

Germany's most successful rock export, the Scorpions built their reputation through relentless touring and an ability to write hooks that crossed language barriers. Rudolf Schenker's rhythm guitar and Klaus Meine's piercing vocals anchored a sound that evolved from psychedelic experimentation through hard rock to polished arena metal.

'Rock You Like a Hurricane' became a stadium staple, while 'Wind of Change,' inspired by Meine's visit to Moscow during glasnost, became the unofficial anthem of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

    Why They Matter
