    Sonic Youth

New York City, New York, USA·1981–2011

Sonic Youth made guitars do things their designers never intended. Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo's alternate tunings, prepared guitars, and noise explorations pushed rock into territory previously reserved for avant-garde composition. Kim Gordon's bass and vocals added an art-school cool that grounded the experimentation.

They bridged the gap between no-wave noise and mainstream alternative rock, eventually signing to a major label and helping bring bands like Nirvana to wider attention.

    Key Albums

    1988Daydream Nation

A double album of transcendent noise-pop that regularly tops all-time alternative lists.

    1990Goo

Their major-label debut. More accessible without sacrificing weirdness.

    1992Dirty

Grunge-era Sonic Youth at their most aggressive and direct.

    Why They Matter

Sonic Youth proved that experimental noise and pop songwriting weren't mutually exclusive, and their advocacy for underground bands helped shape the alternative rock landscape of the nineties.
